Green Technologies: Water

We all know that water is a precious resource that we should preserve and not take it for granted.  Although our site has a ground water well (dug courtesy of our friends of Big Iron Drilling (www.bigirondrilling.com) the well only pumps out at ½ gallon per minute (that's not a lot).

So that we don't over tax our well, and at the same time make sure there's enough water for both internal and external needs, we're looking a various methods to preserve the water that we'll have on site.  One easy way to collect water is through rainwater collection.  Essentially, through a series of sloping roofs (kept clean), enclosed gutters and a receiving tank, we'll be able to harvest the rain water that would otherwise run off the building and into the ground.

We've also looked at whether the creation of a "grey water" system makes sense or not.  For arid areas grey water systems - the re-use of water in a building by diverting shower and other "grey" water (sinks) towards other uses such as toilets. By "recycling" the water within a structure, there can be a dramatic drop in the water needs of any individual building.  For us, we'll explore the cost/benefit of creating such a system.

Because of the low water output from our well, we feel the need to look for alternative sources of water. As our rainwater collection system progresses we'll update this section and share with you our experiences. In the meantime, we've listed some links on this page that we've found to be helpful in gathering information.
